Nnoitra is the fifth Espada, signified by the "5" tattoo on his tongue. He is an extremely tall and lanky arrancar, dwarfing Yasutora Sado by at least a foot (even when leaning over). He has long, black hair and almost always wears a huge smile on his face which reveals his upper teeth. He wears an eyepatch, three bracelets on each wrist, and his arrancar uniform includes an overblown, spoon-like hood, although in the past, it only had a normal collar and his hair was just above shoulder length. The remains of his hollow mask and hole are not visible.

Kumagawa Misogi, more known as Kumagawa, was a nihilist who believes that there is no point to life or reason to be born. He has absorbed all the negative aspects of the people he met, failing at everything and losing to everyone at everything. Medaka attempted to reform him, like she had done to her other classmates, but Misogi proved to be beyond her influence. Medaka describes him as a compulsive liar who places no meaning in trust or doubt. As a negative person by nature who could kill a person just as easily as he could breathe, Kumagawa thinks nothing of the lives of the people around him and could take them away easily. Despite the immensely negative personality he possesses, he has a purely positive look regarding himself and has always been seen smiling. As a child, he was tested for abnormalities, but was believed to be normal.

The main character is a large man with an even larger heart. He remains calm and only loses his cool when his friends are hurt. When he speaks most people can't help but feel overwhelmed and see the error of their ways. He saved Hinako from Kiriu Touya and became the banchō of Chiyoda district. He helps the little guy and doesn't care about being powerful or rich. Besides his desire to destroy the District Plan he seems happy just enjoying the simple things. He goes to Raimei Senior High School, and follows what he calls simple logic (someone hurts your friend you hurt them back). Besides his fighting knowledge and schoolwork Akira isn't very knowledgeable of technology. His strength and massive build makes delicate work hard for him. Besides taking down other Banchos Akira also helps those in his district with their problems. The power of his punch easily exceeds 40 tons.
