Kenshin Himura, also known throughout the anime as Hitokiri Battousai (Battousai the Manslayer) or Himura the Battousai is the main character of the anime series Rurouni Kenshin. His original name was Shinta. His parents died of cholera when he was very young and as a result, was adopted by three slave women in a traveling slave wagon. Soon after meeting them, bandits had raided the convoy and killed his three new guardians and where about to kill him when Seijeru Hiko killed the bandits. Hiko soon adopted the child and because Shinta was not a name fitted for a swordman, he renamed him Kenshin, meaning "Heart of Sword," took him under his wing and taught him the Hiten Mitsuruugi Ryu.
The next time we see Kenshin is 10 years later as he has become a wanderer who helps out anyone in need who is suffering right before his eyes. Those long 10 years have taken him from Kyoto, all over Japan to where we find him in episode one of the anime, in Tokyo, still keeping his vow never to kill again. It is here where he meets Kaoru Kamiya and his whole life begins to change once again.

Kumagawa Misogi, more known as Kumagawa, was a nihilist who believes that there is no point to life or reason to be born. He has absorbed all the negative aspects of the people he met, failing at everything and losing to everyone at everything. Medaka attempted to reform him, like she had done to her other classmates, but Misogi proved to be beyond her influence. Medaka describes him as a compulsive liar who places no meaning in trust or doubt. As a negative person by nature who could kill a person just as easily as he could breathe, Kumagawa thinks nothing of the lives of the people around him and could take them away easily. Despite the immensely negative personality he possesses, he has a purely positive look regarding himself and has always been seen smiling. As a child, he was tested for abnormalities, but was believed to be normal.

His minus, "All Fiction", allows him to erase the existence of things; this includes things with a form, injuries, and even his "aura" and minuses, as shown when he tried to make Emukae's minus become nothing.


In chapter 71 he was first time seen to express emotion as anger (usually most of the minus are emotionless). As said by Medaka, he actually cares for his comrades.

Later he traded "All Fiction" for his original minus, "Book Maker", which allows him to make even pluses minuses, which was proven in his battle against Medaka. After his defeat - which he admitted, Kumagawa was given the Student Council Vice-president position by Medaka, which made him the final member of the Council.
